What rules construct the Gabby look book?Ī: I've learned that no matter what I wear, somebody will hate it. It's always going to be the cooler, edgier place to live, in my opinion. And when I say "stuff," I mean my clothes and my mom. (Laughs.) And, you know, I know where everything is. New York happens to be my favorite place because all of my stuff is there. Do you live in both LA and New York?Ī: I don't live in LA, but I visit there quite a bit. Q: You're currently living in Chicago filming for the summer. I just assume anyone who is genuinely flirting with me, sorry, I don't believe you. What it does is that any guy that wants to get close to me or wants to be friends with me, wants to come up or whatever, they flirt with me. But no, acting has done nothing for my dating life. I like to make this joke that I'm like lonely, but I'm not. Has your dating life gone through the ceiling?Ī: (Laughs.) No, it has not. Q: You're in Chicago filming the next season of "Empire." The show has a huge following, and you get tons of on-screen time. I think there's more of us with more style and more gumption. It's like a plus-size fashion convention, and there's more out there for us. But now I think there has been a huge movement in the plus-size arena. Q: Do you think that fashion and body image have progressed for the positive over the past few years, or not?Ī: Look, when I was a kid, the only plus-size kinds of clothes that I could wear were the plus-size clothes that my mom or my aunt would wear. And I think you just have to be the one to decide what is beautiful. I can't decide that they're beautiful and I'm not.

And so I cannot look at the two of them and decide that I am not beautiful, because I see who's on the cover of People Magazine or because I see who is on TV and all of these reality shows and stuff.

And I think that my mom is beautiful, and I think that my dad's skin color is beautiful. What advice would you give to young black women who struggle with the mainstream's constant portrayal of a beauty standard that doesn't include them?Ī: Look, I'm from Brooklyn, New York. Q: You've spoken about deciding for yourself that you too are beautiful despite an industry that says otherwise. (Laughs.) I'm funnier than people think I'm going to be and more personable than people think I'm going to be. I think I'm a little smarter than people think I'm going to be. And I think they did assume that until I opened up my mouth. It was fair for everyone to assume that Precious was who I am.
